Atypical employment and its influence on the trade unions

The meeting of the textile trade union of southeastern Europe took place on March 28, 2019 in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Hercegovina.

The participants of the forum discussed the atypical employment and their impact on unions. This topic is very important, it contributes to many changes in the world of work, among others it reduces interest among workers for the trade union membership.

In his introductory presentation, Milan Jevtic gave the most important features of the atypical employment in the European Union and Germany. He emphasized the key elements in the European Union, which are important for the trade unions in Southeast Europe: Working for an indefinite period remains the most common employment status; Atypical workers have unfavorable working conditions in many dimensions of job quality, which reduces their interest in joining a union; it is important to distinguish atypically from precarious employment, each atypically form is not automatically precarious.

In all participating countries, the new forms of work are becoming more important, especially working for a definite period, temporary agency work and seasonal work.

New forms of work bring new challenges for workers and trade unions that need to be resolved. In seeking answers to these challenges, trade unions face additional difficulties in most countries in the region, such as high unemployment, low salaries, lack of genuine social dialogue at all levels, old-fashioned trade union structures. One possible answer came from Slovenia, the largest umbrella organization in the country (ZSSS) has established a new trade union for the precarious workers. These regional events will remain a good platform to find new ways to better organize and new strategies on both this and other topics.
